Step 1: figure out what's actually limiting you
Before spending anything, identify the real bottleneck:
- Games or programs stutter, but the GPU usage shown in Task Manager is low -- that's usually a CPU or RAM bottleneck, not a GPU problem
- Everything feels slow to load, but runs fine once loaded -- that's almost always storage (an old hard drive instead of an SSD)
- The system runs out of memory or heavily uses swap/page file -- that's RAM, and it's often the cheapest, highest-impact upgrade available
The upgrade order that gives the best value
1. Storage (if still on a hard drive) -- moving to an SSD is the single biggest "everything feels faster" upgrade for the money, full stop 2. RAM (if under 16GB, or under 32GB for creative/CAD work) -- cheap relative to the improvement in multitasking and stability 3. GPU -- only once storage and RAM are already sorted, and specifically if your actual workload (gaming, rendering) is GPU-bound 4. CPU/motherboard -- the most expensive and involved upgrade, usually last, and only when the CPU is genuinely the bottleneck for what you do
When a full rebuild makes more sense than upgrading
If your motherboard is on an old socket that can't accept a modern CPU, or more than two major components need replacing at once, the labour and compatibility overhead of piecemeal upgrading often isn't worth it compared to a fresh, matched build.
